Walter Payton was born in Columbia in Jule 1954. He was interested in playing football from an early age. He helped his high school team win many games and was popular all over the state. After his recognition as a player in high school, he was offered a scholarship by Jackson State University. There, he continued to play and broke many records. He even set the NCAA Division II record for points scored. He was also named an All-American, showing he was one of the best players. This success at Jackson State helped him start his famous career in the NFL.
Why He Was Famous In Football?
Walter Payton was selected by the Chicago Bears in the first round of the 1975 NFL Draft. He played 13 seasons with this team and soon became a superstar for his impressive performances.
At 5’10” and 200 pounds, Payton rushed for 3,563 yards in four seasons at Jackson State. In the NFL, he dominated rushing records. When he retired, he held records for 16,726 total yards, 10 seasons with over 1,000 rushing yards, 275 yards in one game, 77 games with over 100 rushing yards, and 110 rushing touchdowns. He had 4,368 combined attempts and 21,803 combined yards, scoring 750 points on 125 touchdowns.
Walter Payton ruled the NFC, leading in rushing yards for 5 whole seasons. In ’77, he was a scoring machine with 96 points, topping the conference. And get this – as a rookie, he crushed it in kickoff returns, winning that title too.
Payton wasn’t just good, he was elite. He got named All-Pro and All-NFC seven times. And he played in the Pro Bowl nine times – basically an all-star every year.Payton won NFL MVP twice – in ’77 and ’85. Those same years, he also snagged NFL Offensive Player of the Year.
He rushed for over 1,000 yards in 10 of his 13 seasons, with his best season in 1977, rushing for 1,852 yards, the third highest in history at that time. Payton also caught 492 passes for 4,538 yards and 15 touchdowns.
Payton was an incredible player. He missed only one game in his whole life and then played 186 consecutive games.
